Fields of Home StoryScape

FIELDS OF HOME is a StoryScapes mini-unit based on an adaptation of the Storyline strategy. Storyline is a teaching method that encourages students to build and explore understandings and deepen their appreciation and knowledge of topics or concepts.

The Storyline approach fosters critical and creative thinking, democratic practices and skills, curiosity and self-directed learning – all essential 21st century competencies. It is centered on the basic elements of story, a structure familiar and comfortable to children. Storyline strategy integrates literacy skills and helps children apply their learning to real social issues in the world around them.

The general learner objectives are as follows: 

English Language Arts – Grade 4 and 5: 

General Learner Outcome 1: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print and other media texts. 

General Learner Outcome 2: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print and other media texts. 

General Learner Outcome 3: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to manage ideas and information. 

General Learner Outcome 4: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to enhance the clarity and artistry of communication. 

General Learner Outcome 5: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to respect, support and collaborate with others.

Social Studies – Grade 4: 

General Learner Outcome: 4.1.1 – Value Alberta’s physical geography and natural environment. 

General Learner Outcome: 4.1.4 – Analyze how Albertans interact with their environment by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues. 

General Learner Outcome: 4.2.1 – Appreciate how an understanding of Alberta’s history, peoples and stories contributes to their own sense of belonging and identity. 

General Learner Outcome: 4.S.1 – Develop skills of critical thinking and creative thinking. 

General Learner Outcome: 4.S.3 – Develop skills of geographic thinking. 

General Learner Outcome: 4.S.5 – Demonstrate skills of cooperation, conflict resolution and consensus building. 

General Learner Outcome: 4.S.7 – Apply the research process. 

General Learner Outcome: 4.S.8 – Demonstrate skills of oral, written and visual literacy
